I recently went and had the chicken St Joseph! It was truly delicious. The service is great and really is authentic to the Italian bakery experience. If you are interested definitely visit - there are quite a few goodies to look through while waiting in line. Loved it!

Best meatloaf sandwich I ever had in my life! This places hops at lunch so look over the menu online to narrow your choices down before you go but also be prepared to accept suggestions from the wonderful woman at the counter! I had both the meatloaf and the turkey club sandwiches.. Both were delicious but the meatloaf (I had it with just lettuce, tomato & ketchup, not parmigian) was spectacular! It was so good I stopped by again on the day I was leaving town. Couldn't imagine a better meal for on the road! The sandwich on a roll is plenty big for one person. The sub size would easily feed 2, maybe 3. Also sampled some pastries. The lobster tail., a light and flaky pastry crescent filled with custard, was delicious. The lemon bars were bright and citrusy. The sfogliatelle, the same light and flaky pastry baked around ricotta and orange, was like if phyllo and orange cheesecake met and made a baby. So yummy! Be aware, it's a substantial step up to go in the door and space is tight. There may be a line, but they work quickly and it is absolutely worth the wait. A lot of people come to Gloucester with "eat lobster" on their must-do list. I would add "stop at Virgilio's" to that list!

What a local gem. This shop had a line out the door and now we know why. The inside is arranged as half little grocer and half deli/bakery counter. The staff are friendly and efficient and some of them seem to be truly very Italian :) We ordered two sandwiches and got to enjoy them outside at one of the two sidewalk tables (no seating inside). - chicken cutlet sandwich: a generous piece of chicken! more like a chicken parm cut than a real cutlet, but no complaints as it was juicy and fresh. lots of cheese. I added pickles which I feel was a necessary addition because the sandwich overall was needing some tang. delicious bread and fresh ingredients! the structure of the sandwich was difficult to maintain as it shortly started sliding around and i lost some toppings to the table. - steak cutlet sub: HUGE! i think the move here is to order one sub and split it with someone else. you'll leave full! this was similar ingredients to the chicken cutlet sandwich, but the cutlet on this was extremely thin. i think both cutlets would be best if they were a thickness somewhere in between the two. the bread on the sub was better than the roll - easier to squish down and contain the toppings. If I lived in town, I'd be here every week. I'd take all my visitors and guests here. Make sure you stop in and see why the locals love it so much!

Design the perfect Italian sub shop in your mind. That's Virgilios. Whenever I'm visiting home, we go here at least three times. In theory to bring sandwiches to the beach. But we usually eat them in the car outside because the oil and vinegar is essential but can make the bread mushy. Northeaster (veg) and St. Joe's are the go to order. Slice of pizza of the kiddo. There's no table service, unless you're Whoopi Goldberg, who I ran into once being served a slice of pizza at a table.

I love Virgilio's and so does everyone else. My family has been going here sfor bread since before I was born, but I finally got to try a sandwich while visiting Cape Ann. I got the eggplant special, adding hots as one does, on a roll. My boyfriend got the chicken St. Joseph as a sub. Both were delicious. The eggplant was thin and crisp and the sandwich was flavorful. I almost couldn't finish it. Virgilio's is tiny, but also has a great selection of Italian cooking essentials. Olives, pasta, tomatoes, wine, etc. Which is nice so you don't need to always run to a bigger store. The cannoli looked great and so did the pizza--I'm hoping to try on a return visit. Staff was friendly. There are two tiny tables outside, so this is really a takeout shop. I highly recommend visiting.

Popped over here while staying in a local hotel due to the hype and it did not disappoint. Another local store owner was super hyped about their bacon corn chowder and gave us a bunch of recs haha. We ordered the breakfast sandwich, which had the largest egg I'd ever seen. It was pretty skimpy with bacon and I'd probably prefer a different type of bread vs the sesame bun it comes with but they didn't offer other options. A steal for the price and maybe the sausage would have been the move. Loved the wedding cookies though and received some high recommendations for the subs!
